Rich in Iron and Sources of Protein.. Are you ready to eat Mobin caterpillars?

From disgusting to delicious: A South African start-up aims to change the way nutritious caterpillars, known as mopane worms, are viewed and consumed around the world.

In Europe or the United States, the idea of ‚Äč‚Äčeating worms or insects seems intuitive rather than disgusting. But South African chemical engineer Wendy Vizela has found a way to put these protein- and iron-rich insects on the menu, and grind them into flour to make a protein powder.

This is then used to prepare cookies, chocolate bars, cereal, or even smoothies. Steamed and chopped mopane fry can also be used as a topping for pizza.

While the consumption of insects and worms is conquering new territories, particularly in the West, food anthropologist Anna Trapidou warns against consuming mopane as a “Sort of a sightseeing adventure where you get a medal” to dare eat it.

“I won’t eat a worm. I’m sorry, that’s disgusting. But if you give it to me in the form of chocolate… it’s really delicious”Capt. Jill Odendahl, 38, left a stockpile of protein bars made from caterpillars.

Mrs. Vesela now plans to start breeding. These insects need neither water nor soil, they need only a tree, the mopan, which grows in the hot and dry regions of South Africa and on which their larvae feed and reproduce.

With reproduction, Wendy Vesela can have several crops per year. Currently, women are employed in villages when the season comes, in December and April. Larvae are gutted, then boiled and dried.
